Ms. Berbenzana was raised by a professional choreographer and singer father and a Sunday school teacher mother in a provincial area in the Philippines. All throughout her public education she not only studied in an English-only settings but was forced by her parents to speak English only in her family life. No one had a more powerful effect on her life than her father. Determined to train his timid and shy daughter to be an entertainer like himself, he seized every opportunity to make her perform in a variety of public events ranging from singing and dancing contests to public speech competitions since she was very young. Her career as an amateur entertainer culminated in her college days, when she competed in or hosted a long list of on and off-campus talent shows, beauty contests and public speech contests, and participated in various inter-college and national-level academic and non-academic competitions, winning awards in several English debates, storyboard making contests, public speech competitions and singing contests.
Ms. Berbenzana also showed leadership by joining the National Strategic Marketing Competition as the leader of a 30-member strategic team and won the second place among more than 50 participating teams from across the nation. Even with apparent success on the entertainment and public performance front, she got to develop a strong passion for teaching as she followed in her mother’s footsteps to become a Sunday school teacher. She guided children largely from poor families that couldn’t afford proper education. There she started inventing and conducting various experimental teaching methods trying to insert entertainment elements in her academic and Biblical teachings to increase the children’s attention.
She has resided in Korea since she got married, where she was able to pursue her passion for teaching as a foreign English teacher in some elementary schools and academies. There she taught English plays and musicals, debate and public speech classes, as well as ESL subjects including L/C, R/C, grammar, speaking and writing. Through six years of these teaching experiences, she has got to learn to effectively meet Korean students’ needs and create a friendly and amusing learning environment for them, realizing every day how much she likes serving as an English teacher. She loves singing and cooking Korean foods. She’s so happy to be here at SPJC and looks forward to meeting everyone!
